‘We’re going to have to hire a hit man,’ Dave said pacing back and forth in a panic.

‘I already had,’ Alice mumbled.

‘What?’

‘Nothing.’

‘Is there a possibility that he is telling the truth and this girl...’

‘-Sian.’

‘...Sian was jealous and decided to make all this horrible stuff up?’

Alice shook her head. ‘She had been coming to me for over a year. I helped her put a plan into place for her escape from him. And she succeeded. She’s gone off and started a new life, happy and free from his... It was so awful what he did to her, I just can’t bring myself to imagine it. And now the shithead is dating our daughter.’

‘What are we going to do then?’ he said, angrily. ‘There must be something. I mean, Sarah is not an idiot, she’ll come to her senses surely and tell him to take a hike.’

Alice was barely listening.

‘What are you not telling me?’ Dave asked, reading his dear wife like a book.

She sighed, the emotional pain was unbearable. ‘I might be wrong, but I think this is a set-up.’

‘A set-up? What do you mean?’

‘Brendon bloody Durie has contacted me on more than one occasion asking for Sian’s new location. He hasn’t finished with her yet. I know he hasn’t.’

‘So why is he dating our daughter then, if he really wants his ex back?’

Alice rolled his eyes at Dave. ‘To get to me.’

‘Why?’

‘Because he thinks I have Sian’s location.’

‘Do you?’

‘No.’

‘Can you get it?’

‘That’s against everything I believe in,’ she scolded him.

‘I don’t care! A violent psychopath is dating my daughter. Give him the damn address! Let him kill her, not my daughter.’

Alice fell silent, debating in her mind whether to tell Dave about the pictures Brendon Durie was bribing her with. For all his life experience, Dave was a fairly naive man, much like Sarah. He was brought up in a happy, sheltered family, had a good education paid for by his parents, then went on to have a good career as a large business accountant. Everything he ever needed was there at his finger tips. He’s never gone hungry, struggled to find a job, prematurely lost a family member, or had major health problems. How is this new piece of information likely to go down? How will he handle the fact that his lovely wife had hired a hit man to wipe out serious abusers, and doesn’t regret it one bit. How will Dave understand that now she is being bribed by someone who should be dead, with photos of her watching on, as Birdie knocked out then drowned their last target in the waves?

Before she had a chance to speak, her cell beeped. It was her personal cell, and was hoping it was Sarah admitting that they were right, and she was wrong, and stupid not to listen to their concerns. To her disappointment it was from an unknown number.

‘I think it’s him,’ she said, cautiously.

‘How does he have your personal number?’ Dave asked.

‘Maybe Sarah gave to him.’

‘Why would he want it?’

Alice opened his text.
